1880s Tumbling Blocks Quilt

$795.00
sold

When I lived under the black oaks
I felt I was made of leaves.
When I lived by Little Sister Pond,
I dreamed I was the feather of the blue heron
left on the shore;
I was the pond lily, my root delicate as an artery,
my face like a star,
my happiness brimming.
Later I was the footsteps that follow the sea.
I knew the tides, I knew the ingredients of the wrack.
I knew the eider, the red-throated loon
with his uplifted beak and his smart eye.
I felt I was the tip of the wave,
the pearl of water on the eider's glossy back.
No, there's no escaping, nor would I want to escape
this outgo, this foot-loosening, this solution
to gravity and a single shape.
Now I am here, later I will be there.
I will be that small cloud, staring down at the water,
the one that stalls, that lifts its white legs, that
    looks like a lamb.

-Mary Oliver, Life Story

A true masterpiece of piecing and quilting with a wonderful library-like collection of period fabrics, this Tumbling Blocks quilt is a true treasure. Scroll through the images to admire the incredible variety of fabrics used throughout! The gorgeous border with a tiny red and white grid print frames the blocks beautifully, and brings out the pink and red pieces throughout the quilt. A lovely contrast, the back is made of a fun novelty period print. The quilt is in excellent condition and has been washed by hand and has only a few very small marks as shown in the last photo. A truly special piece to add to your home and collection!

Measurements: 72” x 78”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards Safelight, a North Carolina-based nonprofit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault and child abuse. For more, see safelightfamily.org

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
