Brave Sunflower Quilt
Pattern: Brave Sunflower
Date: c. 1850
Provenance/Notes:
A stunning and incredibly joyful quilt in a beautiful pattern, the Brave Sunflower. The quilter chose a striking design for the pattern, framing the flowers and offset blocks in red with white calico sashing and a sweet teal trim.
The quilting is marvelously rendered with feathered quilting in the sashing and flowers in each of the intersections. The diamonds that make up the sunflower petals are crisp and expertly pieced.
On the back is a rare bit of provenance — a note that has been stitched with some information about the maker. It reads: “Made by Anna Martin Fowler in 1850. Verdella Meek Hankins’ great grandmother.”
Notice that none of the patches on the quilt are made of a solid fabric. Each one has a tiny micro print, from the tiny blue dots on the white fabric to the yellow calico of the petals.
This is a medium weight quilt, which makes the dense quilting all the more imporessive and makes for a very textural piece.
Washed by hand and in excellent condition. A tiny little opening by the edge, easily stitched. A pole sleeve and strip of velcro were lightly stitched to one of the shorter ends for display, but could be easily removed at request.
Measurements: 73” x 86”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this collection will go towards Housing Families First, an organization in Richmond, VA that helps families resolve their homelessness through crisis response, community housing, and youth housing programs. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
