Flower and Star Appliqué Quilt
Pattern: Flower and Star Applique Variation
Date: c. 1850-1860
Details:
a museum-worthy masterpiece almost two centuries old, this beautiful quilt is made in an intricate pattern that combines star and flower motifs — likely a creative design by the quilter
the color palette is stunning and great for all seasons — red flowers, green leaves, and sunny yellow star points on a sky blue ground
the appliqué work is superb (notice the small careful curves in the flowers and leaves) and the piecing incredibly exact (so many pieces and so many angles!)
notice the four-petal appliqué motifs where the blocks intersect and the striking red and cream zigzag border
the amazing back fabric features blue, teal, and tan dots printed on a cream ground
a name is quietly printed under a flower at the center of the quilt, likely that of the maker (though possibly that of the recipient/owner)
washed by hand and in excellent condition with just a touch of the slightest residual discoloration on the zigzag border and a couple minor light spots (see last photos)
Provenance: unknown
Measurements: 80” x 93”

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
