Grecian Square
Pattern: Grecian Square
Date: c. 1880-1900
Provenance/Notes:
A wonderfully graphic quilt for summer, reminiscent of nautical flags. This is such a fun quilt pattern to have rendered with scrappy fabrics!
The yellow calico background gives the quilt a beautiful brightness and double pink squares punctuate the in-between spaces as well as the centers of each of the blocks. A stunning selection of fabrics make up the rest.
Notice how some of the blocks are more uniform in pattern, whereas others are a scrappy mix.
The square motif is continued on the back of the quilt where the quilter chose a wonderful black and cream checkered fabric which was turned to make the trim.
Maker/origin unknown
Washed by hand and in great condition for her age with just a couple small residual marks and a touch of color transfer in a few places from one of the blue fabrics (nothing dark or very noticeable). See last photo.
Measurements: 70” x 80”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of the Sewing Society at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Louisville, Kentucky, whose members use their sewing skills to raise money for the orphanage, both by creating fundraiser quilts and mending worn items. For more on their wonderful work, see https://sjkids.org/get-involved/sewing-society/

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
