Hourglass Postage Stamp Quilt
Pattern: Hourglass Variation / Postage Stamp
Date: c. 1880
Details:
a true wonder of tiny piecing and unique patterning!
196 tiny triangles in cheddar, turkey red, and teal make up each of the 30 blocks on this quilt, which make for a total over 6,100 triangles including all the ones pieced into the sashing and corners
in addition to those primary three colors, a fourth colorway has developed on this quilt because of a fugitive red that was used in some of the red triangles, which has now turned olive
in a couple blocks, where the quilter perhaps ran out of red, she substituted some sweet checkered and double pink fabrics
notice the teal hourglasses where the sashing intersects and the triple border quilted in a cable design, as well as the cluster of hourglass blocks in the corners
this would be a beautiful quilt to hang, and there is a lightly stitched pole sleeve along the top (also easily removed)
soft to the touch
washed by hand and in great condition for her age with just a couple tiny bumps and bruises as shown in the last photo and a touch of residual discoloration in some places on the cream fabric where she was handled the most
Provenance: unknown
Measurements: 62” x 75”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of Tubman in the Twin Cities. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
