Blue: A Chimney Sweep Quilt
Pattern: Chimney Sweep in Garden Maze
Date: c. 1920
Provenance/Notes:
A marine blue Chimney Sweep quilt, with fan quilting that undulates throughout like ocean waves, this quilt brings memories of the sea
Notice the two tones of blue in the quilt that come from the use of two separate lots of blue fabric which have faded differently over time, leaving a lovely visual hint of her history
A beautiful appliquéd Garden Maze frames each of the Chimney Sweep blocks
This is a thicker quilt with a nice layer of batting, which is often found in quilts that were created for daily use (instead of for largely decorative purposes); her construction is a bit more primitive
Maker/origin uknown
Washed by hand and in very good condition with just a couple small residuals stains (see last photo) and a slight touch of residual discoloration on parts where she was handled most
Measurements: 63” x 77”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of the Sewing Society at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Louisville, Kentucky, whose members use their sewing skills to raise money for the orphanage, both by creating fundraiser quilts and mending worn items. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
