Mariner's Calico Compass Quilt

$0.00
sold

The dream of my life is to lie down by a slow river and stare at the light in the trees—to learn something by being nothing a little while but the rich lens of attention.

Mary Oliver / from Entering the Kingdom

The maker of this extraordinary quilt must have been a woman of patience who savored and valued the beauty of her craft. The twelve stunning compasses are each their own masterpiece, unified with four cardinal points in a deep indigo fabric and then uniquely pieced with an assortment of smaller triangles in a variety of colorful antique calicos and shirtings — reds, cheddars, blues, pinks, grey, blacks, and whites. And these are each framed by the most beautiful golden cheddar sashing! To offset the bold geometry of the sashing, the quilter created a soft border — a lovely string of large triangles in a sand and baby blue floral fabric. And though the last owner of this quilt fitted her with a pole sleeve for hanging, it would be hard not to have her in hand to enjoy the special fabric on her back — birds and nests hidden among flowers. For a time, she certainly was used, as she was beautifully mended in three places, with mends that honor her beauty. See photos for the beautiful and whimsical mark these mends have left on the history of this quilt. She has been gently washed and hung to dry and is in great shape for her age (well over a century old) — very structurally sound. On the surface she has a few light marks here and there and slight discoloration, but nothing to detract from her beauty. Her pole sleeve has some water marks from her last wash, but can easily be removed if not needed. May she live on another century in a loving home!

Measurements: 65” x 86”

PLEASE SELECT SHIPPING FOR QUILT ($20), NOT FOR A SMALL QUILT PIECE ($8). ORDER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHIP OTHERWISE.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards the Tahiri Justice Center, a national non-profit organization that supports immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. See Tahiri.org for more on their work.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
