Mariner's Compass Quilt

$1,745.00
SOLD

Pattern: Mariner’s Compass

Date: c. 1900

Provenance/Notes:

  • An absolutely breathtaking collector’s piece, this Mariner’s Compass was made by the hands of a true master quilter with endless dedication and patience.

  • 18 gorgeous Compass blocks sit on a background that is densely and intricately quilted in a beautiful pattern that feathers out from little hearts. Notice the concentric circles quilted over the Compasses, creating an amazing crinkle over the sharp red points. See the photo of the back of the quilt to see another view of the quilting.

  • The compass blocks are composed of 8 primary points with 8 “in-between” points, and 16 smaller points in the background, making a total of 32 points per block. Notice how exacting the piecing is, how sharp the points.

  • The Turkey red on this quilt has taken on a really lovely fade, giving her a light but bright color against the white.

  • This quilt is not thick but not paper thin, and has a substantial hand.

  • It looks like the original quilt was never finished with a trim, and at some point, someone hastily applied a bright red trim by machine, which dishonored the workmanship of the quilt. This trim was removed and edges were carefully turned to the back and stitched by hand, creating a very thin trim, with a narrow white line of fabric reinforcing it along the back edge. See second to last photo.

  • Maker/origin unknown

  • Washed by hand and in excellent condition with just two tiny open seams and a bit of light residual discoloration to one place on the back of the quilt. See last photo.

Measurements: 63” x 83”

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.T
