Mother Elder’s Double Nine-Patch Quilt

$895.00
sold

There is never an end to imagining the lives of the birds.

Or to wondering at the superfluous beauty and unspeaking fight

of butterflies who light nearby: the Eyed Brown, the Spicebush Swallowtail, the Red Admiral, the Red-spotted Purple.

These so visible must stand for countless ones and kinds easily overlooked or hard to see or invisible.

A world of words could not describe this wordless world.

-Wendell Berry

If you love, teeny tiny scrappy squares, then this quilt might be the one for you! Five sets of tiny little 9-patches with squares, half an inch wide, are set inside of each 9-patch block. The wide assortment of scrappy fabrics used throughout each block is absolutely delightful. Another striking detail is the parallel zigzag border design, which adds yet another vibrant touch to this quilt. Zoom in and you will see the randomly playful scraps of fabric filling a triangular corner here or a square there. And if it couldn’t get any better, all of this is that against a beautiful indigo blue background dotted with hearts! This quilt is in very good condition with just a minor amount of shifting to her light batting and a few little light stains on one part of her zigzag design. See photos. She has been washed by hand and hung to dry and is as clean as can be. This is a quilt to adopt and cherish and use for generations to come. Circa 1890s.

Measurements: 71”x77”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards Safelight, a North Carolina-based nonprofit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault and child abuse. For more, see safelightfamily.org

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
