Nautilus Quilt
Pattern: Nautilus
Date: c. 1900-1910
Provenance/Notes:
A graphic old beauty that takes your breath away. This quilt’s Nautilus pattern is wonderfully dynamic, with its sweeping curved arms spinning out from a central pinwheel, and is not often seen in a scrappy iteration.
The palette is classic Americana: deep claret and red with indigo set against white and creamy calicos. A wonderful variety of period prints in the mix — small florals, fine dots, delicate paisleys, and woven stripes.
The curved piecing creates a sense of motion across the surface. A double border of indigo calicos and cream.
This quilt has a beautiful aged patina and a lovely hand.
The diagonal grid quilting is fine and even throughout.
Maker/origin unknown
Washed by hand and in very good condition for her age, with a couple of very minor residual marks, a few small areas of sun fade, and a couple of small patch repairs — all honest evidence of a well-loved life. See last photo.
Measurements: 72” x 80”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of the Sewing Society at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Louisville, Kentucky, whose members use their sewing skills to raise money for the orphanage, both by creating fundraiser quilts and mending worn items. For more on their wonderful work, see https://sjkids.org/get-involved/sewing-society/

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
