Nine Patch Checkerboard Quilt

$1,685.00
SOLD

Pattern: Nine Patch Checkerboard

Date: c. 1860-1880

Provenance/Notes:

  • An absolutely stunning quilt, almost two centuries old, in the most beautiful floral fabrics in a pale sky blue and turkey red.

  • A rare large size that will fully drape a king-sized bed.

  • The quilting is exquisite! Dozens of different shapes are quilted into the white squares — hearts, flowers, leaves, stars, and even a hand! The blue sashing is quilted with a wonderful textural herringbone pattern.

  • Notice that the majority of the red blocks throughout the quilt are made of the same floral fabric, but there is a different turkey red fabric on a few edge blocks where the quilter likely did not have enough of the fabric

  • A signed piece of fabric is stitched into a back edge. It reads Sarah A. Morrow.

  • Washed by hand and structurally in great condition with one edge block that has been patch repaired and one tiny tear mend. Some scattered residual stains/discoloration remain here and there after a thorough washing but are subdued against the colorful fabrics. See last photo.

Measurements: 95” x 96”

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
