Purple & Red: A Sugar Bowl Quilt
Pattern: Sugar Bowl
Date: c. 1860-1880
Provenance/Notes:
An exquisite heirloom quality 19th century quilt with tiny Sugar Bowl blocks, just 4” wide, intensely quilted in triple rows throughout
The little Sugar Bowls are trimmed in Turkey red and filled with purple calico centers, colors that are echoed around the border.
See if you can spot the one humility block (one block unlike the others) in the first image! Humility blocks are said to have been included by some quilters to signify that no one is perfect but God alone.
This quilt has a wonderful, soft drape and the best dose of quilt crinkle.
Maker/origin unknown
Washed by hand and in very good condition for her age with just a handful of little bumps and bruises — a few little specks, one tiny surface hole on border, a couple very small open seams, and the typical bit of fading of purple to brown in a few places. (19th century purple calico has a fugitive quality to it.) See last photo.
Measurements: 74” x 80”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this collection will go towards Housing Families First, an organization in Richmond, VA that helps families resolve their homelessness through crisis response, community housing, and youth housing programs. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
