$725.00
SOLD

Pattern: Duck’s Foot in the Mud

Date: c. 1890-1900

Provenance/Notes:

  • An exquisite quilt made with sixteen Duck’s Foot in the Mud blocks against a lovely indigo background dotted with tiny yellow accents

  • Notice the subtle variation in the blocks, from the different dark red fabrics used to the single pink block

  • The quilt is beautifully framed with half-blocks all around the edges, creating a ziz-zag line

  • The back is a wonderful checkered chestnut on cream and it has been turned to make a thin trim

  • This is a meticulously quilted piece with circular quilting patterns over all the pieced blocks

  • Hails from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia; maker/origin unknown

  • Washed by hand and in very good condition for her age; a few scattered residual marks, one tiny surface hole, a touch of wear along the trim, and a couple very light areas of fading on the indigo. A few small stains on back. See last two photos.

Measurements: 74” x 75”

15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of an organization in the Shenandoah Valley — the Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center (EPEC)— a non-profit, community-based agency that was founded in 1977 by a group of community volunteers who wanted to help women who were being abused by their partners. Since then, EPEC has grown into a comprehensive resource and counseling center offering service to the region. For more about their work, please visit www.epecwv.org

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
