Sawtooth Star with Flying Geese Border Quilt
Pattern: Sawtooth Star with Flying Geese Border
Date: c. 1860-1880
Provenance/Notes:
- An incredible heirloom quality quilt from almost two centuries ago, created by an expert quilter and artist
- Each Sawtooth Star block is a beauty, each constructed with care and attention to composition and with a wide variety of gorgeous 19th century fabrics, from purple calicos to copper-toned madders to some lovely yellow prints.
- The meticulously cut and pieced triangular Flying Geese blocks around the border create a fitting frame for the body of the quilt
- Notice the beauty of the background madder dot fabric from the 1850-1860 time period with small yellow dots on a rusty madder red.
- The quilting is incredibly dense and varied: a small grid pattern on the background blocks, double rows through the star blocks, straight lines through the Flying Geese border, and a diagonal grid around the outer border.
- Hails from Shenandoah Valley of Virginia; maker/origin unknown (likely Pennsylvania origin)
- Washed by hand and in great condition with just a few tiny residual dots and a few light marks on the back (see last two photos)
Measurements: 75” x 75”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of an organization in the Shenandoah Valley — the Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center (EPEC)— a non-profit, community-based agency that was founded in 1977 by a group of community volunteers who wanted to help women who were being abused by their partners. Since then, EPEC has grown into a comprehensive resource and counseling center offering service to the region. For more about their work, please visit www.epecwv.org

If you need a shipping estimate, please reach out ahead of time. Orders may be subject to VAT/customs fee of the destination country. Please see www.flyinggeese.co/faqs for more information on shipping.
Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
