Seven Sisters Quilt
Pattern: Seven Sisters
Date: c. 1930
Provenance/Notes:
Seven Sisters shine together in the deep indigo night sky. A delightful quilt, a captivating pattern name.
There are various theories of where the name for the Seven Sisters quilt block originated, but one commonly cited is the star cluster in the Taurus constellation by the same name (scientific name: the Pleiades). According to one Greek myth, the Pleiades were seven sisters who were companions of Artemis and were pursued by the hunter Orion. The gods transformed them into stars to protect them.
This quilter chose such a whimsical combination of fabrics, with cheerful pastel plaid stars against a confetti background, set against a rich indigo backdrop in a pattern that is known to be difficult to piece.
A medium weight quilt with a cozy soft feedsack back that feels like flannel (one subtle sack print remains), this is a wonderful everyday piece for the colder weather.
Notice the pretty pink edges on three sides. Was the left trimmed off at some point? Perhaps, and she’s perfect in her irregularity.
Washed by hand and in excellent condition with just a couple hardly noticeable places of residual discoloration and one tiny seam opening. See last photo. A slight hint of a previously used detergent.
Measurements: 68” x 83”
15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of an organization in the Shenandoah Valley — the Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center (EPEC)— a non-profit, community-based agency that was founded in 1977 by a group of community volunteers who wanted to help women who were being abused by their partners. Since then, EPEC has grown into a comprehensive resource and counseling center offering service to the region. For more about their work, please visit www.epecwv.org

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
